Here is a guide on how to shoot layup and reverse layup (with a video).
What is layup?
Layup is a two-point shot attempt by leaping and laying up the ball near the basket.
Phase 1 Preparation and momentum
Step 1 Start with a fast dribble.
Tip: Dribble the ball and make sure to protect if from the defender.
Step 2 Prepare for the two-step approach.
Tip: It is important to gain momentum in preparation for the two-step approach
Phase 2 Two-step approach and aim
Step 3 First step. A powerful leap to your right foot. Hold the ball with two hands and bring it to the right side.
Step 4 Second step. A powerful leap to your left foot. Bring the ball to the left side.
Step 5 Eyes on the target (Corner square box on the board).
Phase 3 Elevation, release and target
Step 6 Spring with your left foot (Your second step)
Step 7 Raise arms and release the ball from your hand
Step 8 Extend arms and roll the ball off the fingers
Step 9 Bounce the ball off the board
Tip: Remember to take your two-step approach about 2.5-3 meters in front of the basket. Practice can make it easy to estimate.
Reserve layup is a shooting technique in which the player goes under the basket to shoot the ball on the other side.
Learning reverse layup can help to change your shot and protect the ball from the defender.
The technique in reserve layup and almost the same as layup. The only difference is that in reverse layup you take the two-step approach near or under the basket.
